Kidney biopsy

Kidney biopsy (nephrobiopsy): accurate diagnosis to maintain health

Kidney biopsy is a minimally invasive procedure, during which a small sample of kidney tissue is taken for subsequent laboratory morphological analysis. The method makes it possible to accurately determine the nature of the organ lesion, diagnose chronic diseases, tumor processes or assess the effectiveness of treatment. The procedure is performed under the control of an ultrasound device, which ensures maximum accuracy and safety of the procedure. Kidney biopsy is a highly accurate diagnostic study that allows you to determine the nature of kidney lesions, establish an accurate diagnosis, stage of the disease, choose the optimal strategy and assess the effectiveness of treatment.

A kidney biopsy is prescribed when other research methods (blood tests, urine tests, ultrasound, etc.) do not provide sufficient information, do not allow to establish the cause of the disease and choose the optimal treatment, and is recommended in the following cases:

  • Chronic kidney disease (e.g., glomerulonephritis, nephrotic syndrome)
  • Rapid deterioration of kidney function without an obvious cause, unknown origin of kidney failure
  • Detection of tumor or immune pathologies, differentiation
  • Systemic diseases with kidney involvement: systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) with suspected lupus nephritis, vasculitis (ANCA-associated, Goodpasture's disease, etc.), amyloidosis or paraproteinemic nephropathies
  • High proteinuria (protein in the urine), indicating significant damage to the glomerular apparatus of the kidney
  • Hematuria (blood in the urine) of unknown origin, especially in the presence of red blood cell casts and dysmorphia
  • Monitoring the condition after kidney transplantation
  • Monitoring the effectiveness of treatment of nephrological diseases for therapy correction.

How to prepare for a kidney biopsy?

Examination: Before the procedure, it is necessary to pass a general blood test, have a coagulogram and an ultrasound of the kidneys.
Doctor's consultation: Tell your doctor about any medications you are taking (especially anticoagulants), allergies, or chronic diseases.
Regime: The procedure is performed on an empty stomach. Do not eat for 8 hours before the procedure, and limit fluids for 2 hours.
Accompaniment: It is advisable to plan to have a loved one accompany you home after the biopsy.

How is a kidney biopsy performed?
  • Position: You lie on your stomach to provide the doctor with access to your kidney.
  • Anesthesia: A local anesthetic is administered to minimize discomfort.
  • Ultrasound control: The doctor determines the exact puncture area using an expert ultrasound device.
  • Tissue sampling: A special biopsy device and a disposable biopsy needle are used, which allows for a quick puncture to take a sample as quickly, safely, and effectively as possible.
  • Duration: The entire procedure takes 20-30 minutes.

Upon completion, a sterile bandage is applied to the puncture site, and if necessary and at the doctor's discretion, you may be transferred to a ward for observation for several hours.

Entrust diagnostics to the best - we will help maintain the health of your kidneys!

Kidney biopsy is the “gold standard” for diagnosing many nephrological diseases. It allows:

  • To accurately determine the type of kidney damage and its pathogenetic mechanisms.
  • Prescribe therapy that restores kidney function.
  • Predict the course of the disease and the likelihood of developing end-stage renal failure.
  • Assess the effectiveness of treatment and adjust therapy if it is ineffective.

Thanks to modern diagnostic methods and morphological analysis, kidney biopsy helps to increase the effectiveness of treatment of nephrological diseases and improve the quality of life of patients.

    • Blood clotting disorders
    • Uncontrolled hypertension
    • Severe abnormalities of kidney development
